Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

Consider this a dare for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of scary movies: Get comfortable with your significant other and view Together. This 2025 indie hit just made its online premiere on the Hulu service. At first glance, it may seem like typical physical horror, but within Together resides a intense contemplation about the ways we decide to love one another.

A Debut Feature Delving into Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, partners that have been together for a decade. Having wed in real life in 2017, the two stars infuse a unique chemistry to their characters, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The plot commences when Millie and Tim move from the urban environment to the rural area for Millie’s job. A familiar story element, sure, but that’s largely where the conventions end. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While trekking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and the two fall into an underground cave. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence starts to affect the duo. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond simple connection.

The whole movie is a slow burn horror experience, weaving in bits of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes during something horrific). The director skillfully blends these components expertly and delivers them in a slowly mounting aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is only the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is waning due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his floundering music career gradually emerges.

Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and distant from his network of friends. He dreads the idea of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is amplified by the fact he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for transportation.

Shanks’ smartest move in this movie refrains from painting one partner or the other the obvious villain.

Tim and Millie confront the type of challenges that are inherent in most partnerships after ten years. Deep down, they continue to care for one another. They still laugh together, provide solace, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their future together.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of codependency and fully committing to a partner, the metaphor avoids being overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a perfect parallel to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal work together symbiotically.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a powerful case for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, some couples who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them make up.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could function as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your partner and say, “I understand that choice”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an test you can experience right now.

Together is available to watch on Hulu as of this moment.
