Super Typhoon Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Massive Evacuations Confirmed

The Philippines was severely impacted by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in at least two people dead and forced the evacuation of over a million residents.

Authorities reported that the powerful weather system triggered extensive flash flooding, coastal inundation, mudslides, and fierce high-velocity gusts, leading to the relocation of millions of people nationwide.

Extensive Destruction and Emergency Operations

In Pandan, Catanduanes, one of the worst-hit regions, emergency crews recorded floodwaters reaching the tops of houses and residences being swept away by strong flows.

“Our personnel rescued fourteen people stranded on the roof surrounded by water in a low-lying neighbourhood,” an emergency official stated. One resident frantically contacted us, saying the roof of his house was at risk of tearing away due to the storm. We rescued him and four relatives.”

By Monday, officials announced two fatalities: one from drowning in Catanduanes and another killed after her home gave way in eastern Samar.

Typhoon Strength and Forecast

The intense storm was downgraded to a typhoon on Monday morning as it crossed the main island, where the capital is located.

According to meteorological authorities, the storm’s sustained wind speed decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, though wind bursts peaked at over 170 mph.

The storm system is expected to lose strength while heading north toward Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The national disaster response service indicated it was still working to assess damage to infrastructure and homes.

Approximately 6,000 evacuation centres were activated to accommodate tens of thousands of households.

Recent Context and Environmental Factors

Fung-wong struck shortly following another severe storm, which killed hundreds of lives and left another 135 missing prior to advancing to Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Search operations for the missing persons were halted on Sunday due to safety concerns for rescue workers.

The climate crisis is making tropical storms more intense and frequent. This typhoon marks the twenty-first storm to impact the nation in 2025.

Researchers have found that the frequency of intense cyclones hitting the Philippines has risen by more than 100% in the past twenty years.

Global assessments suggest that intense storms cause an average of millions in dollars in losses for the Philippines every year.

The nation’s leader declared an emergency declaration on Thursday because of the severe damage from the prior typhoon and anticipated impacts from Fung-wong.
