Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French warplanes in a joint strike against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory used by the Islamic State group (IS), according to the British defence ministry.

The facility, located using reconnaissance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was located in hills just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a number of entry passages leading to the site... initial indications are that the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the strike late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established jihadist rule over significant areas in Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action underscores the UK's leading role, and determination to work closely with our allies, to eradicate any revival of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey stated.

British military aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted comeback" of Islamic State subsequent to its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to every member of British forces involved in this operation for their expertise and their courage," he added. "They were part of numerous UK service members deployed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to remove militants who threaten our way of life, shows how UK forces are prepared to act, all year round, protecting the UK within its borders and strong abroad."

Last December, the American forces carried out what it described as a "massive strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, after an assault claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN says IS still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Syria and Iraq.
