The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the decision.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.
This row threatens to become a facet of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and Europe.
